MARCH 13

AGAINST THE ODDS

Sun-Tzu, in his book “In the Art of War,” says:

If equally matched we can offer battle, if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy, if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him.

Judges 7:1-9

There have been a couple of times in my life, that I got myself in a situation, that if Jesus didn’t show up, I was doomed. How about you? This seems to be the case in Gideon’s life. The odds are stacked against him. Midian’s army had 135,000 soldiers against Gideon’s 32,000 soldiers. That is not good odds. Then, through Gideon’s obedience, God shrunk his army to 300 soldiers. So now, the odds are 300 soldiers with Gideon’s army against the Midian’s army of 135,000. This just went from bad to worse, and Gideon is beginning to feel the stress of it all.

I love this story because of its rawness. I believe that every one of us reading this devotion today can relate to Gideon’s dilemma. Life happens, the struggle becomes real, the odds are against us, then doubt sets in.

When our family surrendered to the ministry, it didn’t make sense. My wife was a stay at home mom (and a great one), we had three children, lived in the church parsonage, and made thirty thousand dollars a year. People thought we were crazy, good people thought we were crazy, even godly people thought we were crazy. It didn’t make sense. We were six hundred miles away from all our family and everything we ever knew as home. If God wasn’t in this move, we were doomed. That is truly when we were introduced to God’s economy. God’s economy is JESUS + NOTHING = EVERYTHING. There was a time when we went to the mailbox at Christmas, and inside there was a thousand dollars cash in an unmarked envelope. There was a time a senior member gave my wife an airplane ticket, out of nowhere, to go home and see her father, who was sick. I don’t want you to think of God’s economy as just monetary means. God moved mightily in the lives of people during the time of our ministry there. We witnessed a great move of God through the people of God.

What about you? What odds are stacked against you according to the world’s standard? Is there an area of your life in which you are doomed unless God shows up?

TODAY:

Remember Jesus + Nothing = Everything.
